AI

This page is to disclose my use of generative AI. For more information about pages like this, please read the /ai ‘manifesto’.

Aside from anything that I quote, the content of this website is written by me. For longer posts, I now routinely use ChatGPT to proof-read my work using the following prompt, adapted from the one shared by Molly White:

Please proofread the following Markdown-formatted document and point out any spelling or grammar problems, typos, and other such issues. Note that the document is written in British English. Do not change the tone of the writing or try to adjust the reading level. Do not repeat the entire corrected text back to me, simply identify with brief quotes of the flawed text where changes need to be made. Don’t hold back on any suggestions that you have, and don’t be sycophantic — tell me what I need to know to make this better.

<document>

This typically does things like:

  • Spots spelling errors
  • Identifies styling issues (e.g. when I’ve typed ‘IMDB’ instead of ‘IMDb’)
  • Flags where the wrong type of quote mark has been used
  • Shows inconsistencies between singular and plural, and articles
  • Gives me suggestions for awkward and clunky sentences
  • Spots hyphenation errors
  • Flags missing or additional spaces
  • Identifies where I have made errors such as saying ‘I did this on Tuesday’ and then ‘the next day, on Tuesday’
  • Etc.

I then go through my draft and edit it myself based on this feedback. I don’t always agree with the items that have been flagged, and I don’t update the post with fixes and changes where they detract from my style or don’t sound like something I would write.

Very occasionally after proofreading with the LLM, I might ask the chatbot whether it thinks my reasoning hangs together or if there are any other suggestions. But I never get it to write the text for me.

Generally, I do not use any AI-generated imagery unless it is to make a point. If AI images appear on this website, I will disclose them as such.

I also use AI tools to find information. This has somewhat displaced web search for me. I frequently use the ‘deep research’ tools in ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to provide a longer report if I am looking into a topic. I am very wary of using anything in these reports without further investigation, but they save lots of time in bringing together many sources that would otherwise have taken me hours to look into.
