me thinking. Until I watched it, I hadn\u2019t appreciated the background to Marc Almond and Gene Pitney\u2019s wonderful duet version of <em><a title=\"YouTube: Marc Almond and Gene Pitney \u2014 Something\u2019s Gotten Hold Of My Heart\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/I8ZIErShjw0\">Something\u2019s Gotten Hold Of My Heart<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almond had recorded a cover of Pitney\u2019s song for his 1988 album <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: The Stars We Are\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Stars_We_Are\">The Stars We Are<\/a><\/em>. Pitney, the <a title=\"YouTube: Gene Pitney \u2014 Something\u2019s Gotten Hold Of My Heart (1968)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AqPfqb34m60\">original singer of the song in the late 1960s<\/a>, heard this version and offered to re-record it with Almond as a duet. This version was released as a single in January 1989 and spent four weeks at <a rel=\"tag\" class=\"hashtag u-tag u-category\" href=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/tag\/1\/\">#1<\/a> in the UK chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was 12 years old when the song came out and I loved it. It gets into your brain and you find yourself singing it for weeks. Imagine loving the song so much that you decide that you want to save up your money and buy the album instead of the single. You wander to the record store with your hard-earned cash. Find the album, buy the album, get it home, sit down in front of the stereo, play it, the big number arrives and&#8230;no Gene Pitney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t you feel a bit cheated and let down?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It got me thinking \u2014 what other albums are there out there where the big single, or version of the single, is missing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I canvassed some friends for other examples and have gathered some together here. I think that there are three variants to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What other examples have I missed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Albums where the big song is present, but is significantly different to the single<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Back to Life<\/em> on <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Club Classics Vol. One\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Club_Classics_Vol._One\">Club Classics Vol. One<\/a><\/em> by Soul II Soul. <a title=\"YouTube: Soul II Soul \u2014 Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TB54dZkzZOY\">The single<\/a> is a groovy, funky masterpiece. <a title=\"YouTube: Back to Life\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0IAjuyq14dY\">The album version<\/a> is an acapella tune that while beautiful, lacks the punch that the single delivers. This is the version that accompanies <a title=\"YouTube: Queen \u2014 Hammer To Fall (Official Video)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JU5LMG3WFBw\">the official video<\/a>, so I assume it was the single.
