Being involved in our little <a title=\"Andrew Doran: The best night of the month\" href=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2017\/09\/29\/the-best-night-of-the-month\/\">Album Club<\/a> (and, more recently, investing in a turntable) has brought a lot of music into my life, and I\u2019ve been on many voyages of discovery. It\u2019s a really interesting album \u2014 it definitely pushes up against the boundaries of the kind of jazz that I like, but has some great songs on it. <em>Oyster Trails<\/em> kicks off the album in a very bizarre, dream-state fashion, kind of like an updated version of the start of <a title=\"Kate Bush\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katebush.com\">Kate Bush<\/a>\u2019s <em><a title=\"YouTube: Kate Bush \u2014 Moving\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YSOACab2t7k\">Moving<\/a><\/em>, the opening track from her debut album. This song then takes a different path when when the distorted bass and drums kick in, followed by Kinsella\u2019s wonderful vocals and a gradual crescendo of the most incredibly beautiful trumpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Les Fleur<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 Minnie Riperton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0NPu5tEkovc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This track is one that turned up on my Spotify <em><a title=\"Spotify: Andrew Doran\u2019s Discover Weekly\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/spotify\/playlist\/37i9dQZEVXcChNVADJEwgT?si=RCg58ImoT5mFWfGwLu0Dcw\">Discover Weekly<\/a><\/em> playlist and made me sit up and take notice. The opening few bars were so warm and resonant and felt really familiar, even though I was sure I had never heard them before. They immediately got me into a place where I know I could be about to hear something really good. Riperton\u2019s vocals are wonderful and delicate, and the song soon builds to a big crescendo with the backing vocals singing the main chorus. Like the album it comes from, <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Come To My Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Come_to_My_Garden\">Come To My Garden<\/a><\/em>, it has a very strange vibe and reflects the out-there musical collective of <a title=\"Wikipedia: Rotary Connection\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rotary_Connection\">Rotary Connection<\/a>, the band that Riperton had emerged from. The album isn\u2019t a straightforward listen and is a bit of an acquired taste; some of the songs leave me with feelings that no other music seems go give me, almost as they are not from this world. The final minute or so of <em><a title=\"YouTube: Minnie Riperton \u2014 Rainy Day In Centerville\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/55xb0LYWqt4\">Rainy Day In Centerville<\/a><\/em> is a case in point; it is haunting and unnerving, and I cannot work out whether this was intended or if I am just hearing it with ears not tuned correctly to the 1970 vibe. I\u2019ve loved <em><a title=\"YouTube: Free \u2014 All Right Now\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lSdBtoIIYT4\">All Right Now<\/a><\/em> since my mum introduced me to it as a child but I\u2019d never explored their music further. The super-cheap price lured me to take a chance and I am glad I did. After many plays, this track remains my favourite. It comes at the end of side one and is achingly beautiful, starting as a quiet, understated message to a loved one and building to an incredible three-note guitar riff which sounds as though it is being played at the top of a mountain, resonating across the valleys all around. I thought I had already seen <em><a title=\"Janet Jackson: Taking Control\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b017gssb\">Janet Jackson: Taking Control<\/a><\/em> but although it was a few years old, either I had missed it the first time around or wasn\u2019t paying enough attention. I never owned any Janet Jackson records as a kid but her music was definitely something that I enjoyed, and it was a love shared with my school friends. In the documentary they broke down the details of Rhythm Nation and I discovered that the main riff that underpins the whole song comes from a break in this amazing <a title=\"Sly and the Family Stone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sly_and_the_Family_Stone\">Sly and The Family Stone<\/a> tune. It\u2019s a strange song \u2014 very monotonous, almost hypnotic, and only breaks at the end of each chorus. But it chugs along with such an incredible vibe that you don\u2019t want it to stop. The 80s Pop Map of Britain and Ireland\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0b99n1s\">Smashing Hits! The 80s Pop Map of Britain and Ireland<\/a><\/em> with Midge Ure and Kim Appleby hit all the right spots for me, with new interviews with many different artists through a geographical lens. I settled into enjoy the series but didn\u2019t expect to find anything revelatory. Then in episode two they focused on Rhyl, North Wales, and <a title=\"The Alarm\" href=\"http:\/\/thealarm.com\">The Alarm<\/a> showed up. I\u2019d been aware of the band since I was very young; some forward-thinking relative bought me a copy of the <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Look-in\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Look-in\">Look-in<\/a> Pop Annual<\/em> in the early 1980s and I had started to read about groups and artists that I had never actually heard. Music was <em>very<\/em> expensive for a pre-teen on 50p pocket money a week and I had no access to explore anything I was reading about. The Alarm stayed in this bracket for me until a few months ago, when this documentary exploded them onto my screen playing <a title=\"YouTube: The Alarm - Sixty Eight Guns, Top Of The Pops 22nd September 1983\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KZp11vks_Ws\">68 Guns<\/a> from Top of the Pops in September 1983. The song is instantly likeable, as is their over-earnest performance and laws of physics-defying haircuts. It was like I had struck gold \u2014 a good eighties band that I had never heard of, hidden in plain sight. So far I\u2019ve only managed to explore their debut, <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Declaration (The Alarm album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Declaration_(The_Alarm_album)\">Declaration<\/a><\/em>, and have been taken aback by how many great songs are on there. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever heard any of them on the radio and cannot fathom why. <em>We Are The Light<\/em> is a real highlight and gives you a taste of the kind of music you can find on the album; it\u2019s as good as anything else that came out of the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Drink The Elixir<\/em> \u2014 Salad<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vV8QvsC68lk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My parents bought <a title=\"Satellite Museum: Amstrad SRX200\" href=\"https:\/\/www.satellitemuseum.com\/vintagesatellite.htm#amstradsrx200\">a satellite dish<\/a> in the late 1980s when I was eleven years old. Adding 16<sup id=\"fnref-5489-1\"><a class=\"jetpack-footnote\" href=\"#fn-5489-1\">1<\/a><\/sup> channels to our existing four felt like a giant leap into the future, so much so that I had friends come over to my house after school specifically to watch it. The fact that <a title=\"Wikipedia: MTV (European TV channel)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MTV_(European_TV_channel)\">MTV Europe<\/a> was one of the channels was life-changing, and I don\u2019t think that there were many days from that point on that it wasn\u2019t tuned in for a few hours in our house. Listening to and talking to my friends about music dominated my time at school, and I remember <a title=\"Salad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saladband.com\">Salad<\/a> being one of the many guitar-based bands that were part of the chat in the mid-1990s. They stuck in my mind as their lead singer, Marijne van der Vlugt, was familiar to me as an MTV Europe host. At that time I didn\u2019t invest too much of my attention their way. Earlier this year the wonderful Super Deluxe Edition blog <a title=\"Super Deluxe Edition: https:\/\/www.superdeluxeedition.com\/news\/steve-lamacq-lost-alternatives-4cd\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.superdeluxeedition.com\/news\/steve-lamacq-lost-alternatives-4cd\/\">alerted me<\/a> to a new 1990s UK indie compilation called <em><a title=\"Demon Music Group: Steve Lamacq Lost Alternatives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk\/catalogue\/releases\/steve-lamacq-lost-alternatives\/\">Lost Alternatives<\/a><sup id=\"fnref-5489-2\"><a class=\"jetpack-footnote\" href=\"#fn-5489-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/em>, curated by Steve Lamacq. There are some highlights, as well as quite a few lowlights, but this Salad track is a standout for me. It\u2019s a low-key, lo-fi start with some strange vocals but it soon finds its groove and takes me back to being 17 again. It\u2019s of its time, but it still sounds great. YouTube even have <a title=\"YouTube: SALAD Drink the Elixir + Ray Cokes live MTV studios\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kIXWnRcs3XY\">a version of the song<\/a> where the band appeared on the MTV Europe show <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: MTV\u2019s Most Wanted\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MTV%27s_Most_Wanted\">Most Wanted<\/a><\/em>, hosted by fellow presenter <a title=\"Wikipedia: Ray Cokes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ray_Cokes\">Ray Cokes<\/a>, which makes me really feel like I\u2019m back there again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Fading Lines<\/em> \u2014 Amber Arcades<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CMyK4G8wb_o?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past couple of years I have spent countless hours listening to Brexit-related podcasts, catching up on news and trying to work out what I can do to help resist the nationalistic, inward-looking path that we are going down. The jewel in the crown is <a title=\"Audioboom: Remainiacs\" href=\"https:\/\/audioboom.com\/channel\/remainiacs-podcast\">Remainiacs<\/a>, which strikes a wonderful balance between humour, anger, information and positive thinking. What I never expected was that the podcast would introduce me to new music. <a title=\"Amber Arcades\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amberarcades.net\">Amber Arcades<\/a>, a\/k\/a Annelotte de Graaf, appeared on <a title=\"Audioboom: Remainiacs #76\" href=\"https:\/\/audioboom.com\/posts\/7041896-people-s-vote-i-m-in-deborah-meaden-of-dragon-s-den-is-our-special-guest\">an episode way back in October 2018<\/a><sup id=\"fnref-5489-3\"><a class=\"jetpack-footnote\" href=\"#fn-5489-3\">3<\/a><\/sup>, talking about her then new album <em><a title=\"Metacritic: European Heartbreak\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/g00\/music\/european-heartbreak\/amber-arcades?i10c.ua=4&amp;i10c.encReferrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWV0YWNyaXRpYy5jb20vbXVza%57MvZXVyb3BlYW4taGVhcnRicmVhay9hbWJlci1hcm%4ehZGVz\">European Heartbreak<\/a><\/em>, and they featured an excerpt of her song <em><a title=\"European Cultural Foundation: Amber Arcades: Goodnight Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.culturalfoundation.eu\/library\/amber-arcades-goodnight-europe\">Goodnight Europe<\/a><\/em>. I <strong>loved<\/strong> it and couldn\u2019t wait to explore more. <em>Fading Lines<\/em> is actually from <a title=\"Heavenly Recordings: Amber Arcades \u2014 Fading Lines\" href=\"http:\/\/heavenlyrecordings.com\/release\/hvnlp126-fading-lines\/\">her first album<\/a>, which is a little less laid-back and a bit more indie. The song reminds me of 1990s pop, with its shimmering distorted guitar riff and difficult-to-discern vocals. Best played very, very loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Furnaces<\/em> \u2014 Ed Harcourt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nrcrke_aAtM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed Harcourt is another artist that I have been aware of for some time but hadn\u2019t listened to. I\u2019m pretty sure that his name appeared regularly in <a title=\"Uncut magazine\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncut.co.uk\">Uncut magazine<\/a> when I read it in the early 2000s, but I never sought him out. Once again, Spotify\u2019s <em><a title=\"Spotify: Andrew Doran\u2019s Discover Weekly\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/spotify\/playlist\/37i9dQZEVXcChNVADJEwgT?si=RCg58ImoT5mFWfGwLu0Dcw\">Discover Weekly<\/a><\/em> playlist brought him firmly to my attention when the amazing <em><a title=\"YouTube: Ed Harcourt \u2014 Loup Garou\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/txbqZyP94_U\">Loup Garou<\/a><\/em> turned up one day. The whole <em>Furnaces<\/em> album <a title=\"Metacritic: Furnaces by Ed Harcourt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/music\/furnaces\/ed-harcourt\">is very good<\/a>, and the title track is a good representation of what you can find there. Great songs, great lyrics, great vocals. From what I\u2019ve read, this may not be his best album which means that there is plenty more for me to get my ears wrapped around as I explore his back catalogue in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Moonshine Freeze<\/em> \u2014 This Is The Kit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BlJzE5p9cFA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <em><a title=\"Spotify: Andrew Doran\u2019s Discover Weekly\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/spotify\/playlist\/37i9dQZEVXcChNVADJEwgT?si=RCg58ImoT5mFWfGwLu0Dcw\">Discover Weekly<\/a><\/em> once more. I\u2019m not sure exactly which song from this album turned up in my feed (possibly <em><a title=\"YouTube: This Is The Kit \u2014 Hotter Colder\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/a0j22lecULw\">Hotter Colder<\/a><\/em>?), but it was quirky and different enough for me to notice and want to explore more. I don\u2019t know much about the band yet, but I love the sound of this track, which blends an eerie folk sound with a beat that makes me want to dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Love Again<\/em> \u2014 Snowpoet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hh_TvOTHyCI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve <a title=\"Andrew Doran: Snowpoet @ Green Note\" href=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2019\/11\/23\/snowpoet-green-note\/\">written about Snowpoet here<\/a> a few times. Their album <em><a title=\"Bandcamp: Snowpoet \u2014 Thought You Knew\" href=\"https:\/\/snowpoet.bandcamp.com\/album\/thought-you-knew\">Thought You Knew<\/a><\/em> was a major catalyst to me <a title=\"Andrew Doran: Vinyl explorations\" href=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2018\/10\/12\/vinyl-explorations\/\">purchasing a turntable last year<\/a>. <em>Love Again<\/em> is a big track on a very short album, running at seven minutes of the 34 in total, but it\u2019s a lovely thing that it is allowed to expand in the way it does. The main refrain is hypnotic and draws you in as the song progresses. All of the instruments perfectly compliment each other to make something wonderful \u2014 the jazz drums and keyboards alongside the most gorgeous, warm bass and a perfect saxophone solo \u2014 layered with Lauren Kinsella\u2019s beautiful voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Honey<\/em> \u2014 Robyn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mru9GG3ur9U?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to <a title=\"Wikipedia: MTV (European TV channel)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MTV_(European_TV_channel)\">MTV Europe<\/a> again. Robyn came to my attention back in the mid-1990s when MTV were playing <em><a title=\"YouTube: Robyn - Do You Know (What It Takes)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/z4n6ymEMQmk\">Do You Know (What It Takes)<\/a><\/em> and <em><a title=\"YouTube: Robyn - Show Me Love (Official Video)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bhWEI6-_w9E\">Show Me Love<\/a><\/em> on heavy rotation. I\u2019m an unashamed fan of great pop music and I loved both of these songs. Later, I picked up a cheap second-hand copy of her debut album <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Robyn Is Here\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robyn_Is_Here\">Robyn Is Here<\/a><\/em>. Ten years later, I noticed from the billboards on the London Underground that Robyn was back as a dance artist with tracks such as <em><a title=\"YouTube: Robyn - Dancing On My Own (Official Video)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CcNo07Xp8aQ\">Dancing On My Own<\/a><\/em> and seemed to have a new generation of followers, but I never spent the time to check out her new music. Fast forward <em>another<\/em> ten years to the release of <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Honey (Robyn Album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honey_(Robyn_album)\">Honey<\/a><\/em>. This time, I took a chance and bought the album. <a title=\"Andrew Doran: Robyn \u2014 Honey\" href=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2019\/02\/26\/5028\/\">After repeated plays the album reveals itself to be a masterpiece<\/a>; it\u2019s dance music, but it is so much more than that. I wanted to include both <em><a title=\"YouTube: Robyn \u2014 Baby Forgive Me\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AQggnOIpCvs\">Baby Forgive Me<\/a><\/em> and <em><a title=\"YouTube: Robyn - Send To Robin Immediately\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NdX4B8e2NPo\">Send To Robin Immediately<\/a><\/em> (sic) in this playlist as they compliment each other so well as back-to-back tracks, but that would be two songs! <em>Honey<\/em> is a good compromise. It\u2019s the centrepiece of the album and manages to sound simultaneously joyous and contemplative. It\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>You Don\u2019t Care<\/em> \u2014 Terry Callier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UvPbYWnNoDw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stumbled across this album while browsing <a title=\"Discogs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/\">Discogs<\/a> one evening, being drawn in by <a title=\"Discogs: Terry Callier \u2014 What Color Is Love\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Terry-Callier-What-Color-Is-Love\/master\/99495\">the amazing cover<\/a>. This album is a complex affair from 1972, with incredible songs that stretch out without feeling too long, and <a title=\"YouTube: Terry Callier - Dancing Girl\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/abyEOIvMdRY\">an opener that runs to nearly nine minutes<\/a>. I hadn\u2019t realised that I\u2019d first heard Callier\u2019s voice when he duetted with <a title=\"Beth Orton\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bethortonofficial.com\">Beth Orton<\/a> on <em><a title=\"YouTube: Beth Orton \u2014 Pass In Time\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/giRABBvL8f8\">Pass In Time<\/a><\/em> from her <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Central Reservation (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Reservation_(album)\">Central Reservation<\/a><\/em> album, a favourite of mine from 20 years ago. <em><a title=\"Albumism: TRIBUTE: Celebrating 45 Years of Terry Callier\u2019s \u2018What Color Is Love\u2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.albumism.com\/features\/tribute-celebrating-45-years-of-terry-callier-what-color-is-love\">What Color Is Love<\/a><\/em> is a real late-night treat, and <em>You Don\u2019t Care<\/em> finishes things off with a backing-vocal driven refrain and beautiful guitars. It\u2019s the only song on the album that doesn\u2019t feature Callier\u2019s vocals, but it sticks with you long after it finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"footnotes\"><hr>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"fn-5489-1\">Potential channels.
