I was 12 when <a title=\"YouTube: Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation (Official Music Video)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OAwaNWGLM0c\"><em>Rhythm Nation<\/em><\/a> came out and remember one of my school friends raving about it. I loved the video when I saw it on MTV all those years ago. Thirty years on, the song has once again become an earworm for me for the past few weeks. Incredible music, incredible dancing.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OAwaNWGLM0c?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The documentary pointed out that the main sample on <em>Rhythm Nation<\/em> comes from a Sly And The Family Stone song, <a title=\"YouTube: Sly &amp; The Family Stone: Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wj5VODa-eTY\"><em>Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)<\/em><\/a>. I\u2019d never heard this before; it\u2019s a complete beast of a tune and has been in my ears just as much.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wj5VODa-eTY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When I get into a song or an album I tend to obsess about it. YouTube is such a great resource for \u2018going deep\u2019 and finding other performances and versions. This <a title=\"YouTube: Anna Koniotou: Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation - Drum Cover\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9jUjZE9FkZs\">drum cover<\/a> of <em>Rhythm Nation<\/em> from Cypriot drummer Anna Koniotou is brilliant \u2014 I love the way she\u2019s smiling and clearly enjoying herself throughout the song, and the fill and stick throw at the 1:15 mark is so much fun to watch.
