It\u2019s good to have on in the background when I need to get some work done; if a song draws me in I can quickly capture it and explore it later. This week it threw up a weird one with what I thought was a bizarre recent electro cover of Eric Clapton\u2019s mid-1980s track <em>Behind The Mask<\/em>, by the <a title=\"Wikipedia: Yellow Magic Orchestra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellow_Magic_Orchestra\">Yellow Magic Orchestra<\/a>. I wasn\u2019t overly-enamoured with it and skipped ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just hearing half of the song was enough for the earworm to bury itself in my brain. So, I went back to explore and ended up going down a rabbit hole. To my shock I found that this was actually the <em>original<\/em> from 1979 and that Eric Clapton\u2019s version is a cover version. For a piece of electro-pop that is nearly 40 years old, it still sounds very fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u4VMLYnH_Dc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing it again only puzzled me more. Yellow Magic Orchestra\u2019s original version only has lyrics for the \u2018minor chorus\u2019 of the song<sup id=\"fnref-4282-1\"><a class=\"jetpack-footnote\" href=\"#fn-4282-1\">1<\/a><\/sup>. Where did Eric Clapton\u2019s lyrics come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wikipedia of course <a title=\"Wikipedia: Behing the Mask (Yellow Magic Orchestra song)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Behind_the_Mask_(Yellow_Magic_Orchestra_song)\">has all the answers<\/a>. Apparently a chap called <a title=\"Wikipedia: Greg Phillinganes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greg_Phillinganes\">Greg Phillinganes<\/a> covered the song on his 1985 album <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Pulse (Greg Phillinganes album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pulse_(Greg_Phillinganes_album)\">Pulse<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4SreNsrMu7k?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listening to it now, it sounds like the bizarre love-child between the Yellow Magic Orchestra and Clapton versions. All the lyrics from the Clapton version are there, including the backing vocals as the song winds down. He has also kept the prominent synths from the original \u2014 probably delivered by the keytar that he is clutching close to his chest on his album cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-4281\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pulse_by_greg_phillinganes.jpg\" alt=\"_Serious_ keytar\" class=\"wp-image-4281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pulse_by_greg_phillinganes.jpg 300w, https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pulse_by_greg_phillinganes-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">_Serious_ keytar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, Phillinganes was keyboardist for Michael Jackson and it turns out that <em>the King of Pop himself&nbsp;<\/em> is responsible for all of the additional lyrics. The end of the song (from around 3:54 onwards) sounds like a mini-tribute to Jackson and doesn\u2019t really fit with the rest of the tune, but it does give a clue to its pedigree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson had <a title=\"Wikipedia: Behind The Mask (Michael Jackson song)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Behind_the_Mask_(Michael_Jackson_song)\">recorded the song himself<\/a> in 1982 for the <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Thriller (Michael Jackson album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thriller_(Michael_Jackson_album)\">Thriller<\/a><\/em> album but due to disputes over royalties it didn\u2019t surface until <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: Michael (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_(album)\">Michael<\/a><\/em> was released posthumously in 2010. It doesn\u2019t sound like a track from 1982; I\u2019m sure it has been extensively reworked and the results are pretty great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tgvJkWmdnkg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillinganes had taken the song to Clapton who recorded it for his <em><a title=\"Wikipedia: August (Eric Clapton album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/August_(Eric_Clapton_album)\">August<\/a><\/em> album in 1986. Phillinganes contributes both keyboards<sup id=\"fnref-4282-2\"><a class=\"jetpack-footnote\" href=\"#fn-4282-2\">2<\/a><\/sup> and backing vocals, giving us a direct line between all three covers. Going back to this recording, which I\u2019ve known so well since I used to hear it in my dad\u2019s car as a boy in the 1980s, is strange after following <a title=\"Behind The Mask \u2014 Spotify playlist\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/adoran2\/playlist\/4kqZhJQZVJMzwt9Q8NOS6t?si=vscEn_ZRSLy0RV3ZTCdL3w\">this weird journey<\/a>. But I still love it. But if you know the song I am sure you understand what I mean. The Clapton version strange in that it has two repeating passages, the major one being \u2018Who do you love\/Is it me babe\/Is it him now\/I wanna know\u2026\u2019 etc. (which doesn\u2019t feature in the original) and the minor one being \u2018There is nothing in your eyes\u2026\u2019, both of which repeat.
