{"id":26,"date":"2004-05-02T15:41:13","date_gmt":"2004-05-02T15:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/applecrumble.wordpress.com\/2004\/05\/02\/threads-again\/"},"modified":"2017-10-01T13:37:42","modified_gmt":"2017-10-01T13:37:42","slug":"threads-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2004\/05\/02\/threads-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Threads again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'>I finally got around to watching my <a title=\"Threads entry at the Internet Movie Database\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.imdb.com\/title\/tt0090163\/\">Threads<\/a> DVD last night. I really can hardly believe I watched it as a kid &#8211; it was so much more disturbing that I remembered, and very graphic. It&#8217;s one of those films that needs to be watched once &#8211; like <a title=\"Schindler's List entry at the Internet Movie Database\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.imdb.com\/title\/tt0108052\/\">Schindler&#8217;s List<\/a> &#8211; as it has such an important message, but it&#8217;s definitely not something you would watch again and again.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s hard to believe now that during the early 1980s the Government was selling <a title=\"Protect and Survive UK government leaflet from 1980\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090118165110\/http:\/\/www.cybertrn.demon.co.uk:80\/atomic\/main.htm\">leaflets<\/a> on how to &#8216;Protect and Survive&#8217; in the event of a nuclear attack. Even though we constantly face the threat of terrorism in this country &#8211; and have done for a very long time &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t feel as scary as the possibility of a nuclear war.<\/p>\n<p>On a lighter note, as Threads was made in 1984 it was great to see something that I had completely forgotten about &#8211; the arm that used to be at the end of supermarket checkouts to separate different sets of shopping! I&#8217;ve captured an image from the DVD here.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/threads_checkout_arm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/threads_checkout_arm-thumb.jpg\" alt=\"A checkout arm in a scene from Threads\" width=\"176\" height=\"132\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When did these disappear? Why did they go?
