{"id":168,"date":"2005-11-09T22:31:25","date_gmt":"2005-11-09T22:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/applecrumble.wordpress.com\/2005\/11\/09\/critical-mass\/"},"modified":"2017-10-01T19:57:01","modified_gmt":"2017-10-01T19:57:01","slug":"critical-mass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andrewdoran.uk\/blog\/2005\/11\/09\/critical-mass\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Mass"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'>Saw my first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/critical\/index.html\" title=\"Critical Mass London\">Critical Mass<\/a> bike ride the other weekend as I was heading to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkersofwhitehall.co.uk\/\" title=\"Walkers of Whitehall\">the pub<\/a> to meet Mik, Nick and Iain.  It was very exciting &#8211; for a few minutes I felt that I was thrust into the middle of a premium blogging opportunity, armed with my trusty W800i camera and thoughts of what I would post, but it didn&#8217;t quite work out like that.  It was fun for a few minutes &#8211; there were literally hundreds of bike riders and the car drivers were going nuts because they weren&#8217;t able to move &#8211; but unfortunately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/adoran2\/sets\/1305349\/\" title=\"Critical Mass bike ride, Trafalgar Square, October 2005\">my photos<\/a> and video didn&#8217;t come out that well.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cP8dzjVNgTo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p>I think the idea behind the Critical Mass rides is a good one &#8211; reclaiming public places in a peaceful way by using the sheer number of people involved.  It sounded great to me since I read about the movement in the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0006530400\/202-9015035-9979830\" title=\"No Logo\">No Logo<\/a> by Naiomi Klien.  It made me think of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100227031816\/http:\/\/www.icp.org:80\/site\/c.dnJGKJNsFqG\/b.1026823\/k.9432\/El_Salvador.htm\" title=\"El Salvador - work of thirty photographers\">photography exhibition<\/a> on El Salvador I saw at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icp.org\/\" title=\"International Center of Photography\">International Center of Photography<\/a> in New York &#8211; people from El Salvador had no concept of land ownership until the Spanish invaded, which I find totally fascinating.
